Decking Case Study: Calgary International Airport
Supplying the tools for takeoff.
The YYC Calgary International Airport in Calgary, Alberta, was looking for a massive expansion—a $1.4 billion investment to more than double the size of the previous airport facilities. The completed project would include a 1.2-million-square-foot roof and floor deck, including a “barrel roof” Arrivals and Departure Hall with a 300-meter radius of curvature.
With such a major project on the line, the installer, Custom Metal Contracting Ltd., needed to make sure they had the right equipment for the job.
We worked with the installer, structural consultants and general contractor, and all parties agreed that the Hilti DX system was the right choice to get the job done due to its productivity and ability to wrap the deck. The Hilti DX system helped ease installation by wrapping the deck against the strong axis while providing a positive connection to the supporting steel.
Hilti PROFIS DF Diaphragm software helped efficiently calculate the diaphragm shear, uplift resistance, interaction, flexibility factors and deflection during the design of the steel deck system.
