Hilti anchoring systems for seismic bracing

Updated December 10, 2021
Updated general code references, references to Afcon hinge information, and adding extra degree angles to Angle C.
Hilti post-installed mechanical anchors and single point cast-in-place anchors are common, cost effective methods for attaching both structural and non-structural elements to concrete base materials. For fire sprinkler pipe applications, Hilti anchors have been effectively used for many years to support the gravity loaded hangers as well as the sway bracing for resisting the lateral and vertical motion resulting from seismic loads.
However, the design of the seismic hinge attachment incorporating NFPA 13, ASCE 7, ACI 318 Chapter 17 and IBC code requirements can be confusing. Simplified load tables have not always been clear how the loads were calculated raising questions by jurisdictions and designers.
Hilti has created an NFPA 13 Seismic Bracing Anchor Load Table technical document which provides an overview of the NFPA 13 seismic sway bracing anchor design and a detailed design example that starts with ACI 318 calculated anchor capacities and incorporates industry standard seismic hinge prying factors and multiple brace angles from NFPA 13. This document then includes more than 2,000 pre-calculated loads for our most common anchoring systems including the new Kwik Bolt TZ 2 and KB1 expansion anchors and our new KCC push-to-fit cast-in insert and the KCM and KCS single-point cast-in anchors. These tables use Hilti anchors with common seismic hinges and will be a tremendous quick reference document for fast and easy seismic brace design.
