Shear lugs are steel embedments that transfer shear loads into concrete base materials. They are used in anchorages when: • The calculated shear design strength for the anchors is less than the factored shear load. • The number of anchors needed for shear transfer is impractical • An alternative means for shear transfer into the concrete is preferred • The anchor bolts alone cannot bear the shear load of the structure With the popularity of shear lugs used in connections with high shear forces, provisions for shear lug design have been implemented into ACI 318-19 Chapter 17. The shear lug design provisions provide guidance on how to account for bearing stress and concrete breakout for multiple shear lug cast-in and post-installed case scenarios.
