Anchor design as per Canadian CSA A23.3-19 considering seismic effects

Hi,
When designing anchors as per Canadian CSA A23.3-19, considering seismic effects, one design option is to adjust the calculated seismic loads to those based on RdRo = 1.3. This option applies to tension and shear design. However, for anchors under both tension and shear forces, the design code is unclear whether the calculated seismic loads shall be adjusted to those based on RdRo = 1.3. Any help clarifying this issue from HILTI would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your attention.
Regards
Peng Zhang

Hello Peng,

When it comes to seismic conditions, CSA A23.3-19 allows for the option of applying the RdRo factor (1.3) to both tension and shear.

Specifically, provisions D.4.3.5.3 (d) for seismic tension and D.4.3.6.3 (c) for seismic shear are the design options which will allow for the use of RdRo factor.

PROFIS Engineering is also capable of accounting for both provisions in the load type section and may be worth exploring if you have not done so already.
