Tooling practices

Hello, I was wondering about the best practices for tooling firestop sealants. Specifically, is there an engineering preference for using a spatula versus fingers, and for applying with soapy water versus dry? Are there technical advantages to one method over the other in terms of performance or are the differences generally negligible?
